About this plant

A handsome rainforest tree with glossy leaves marked by three strong veins from near the base. Small yellowish flowers are followed by purple-black fleshy fruit, making it an excellent choice for a layered wildlife garden or rainforest-style planting.

Garden uses: Rainforest garden, wildlife tree, small canopy or mid-storey planting, coastal planting and revegetation.
Wildlife value: The fleshy fruit is eaten by fruit-doves, pigeons, parrots, honeyeaters and figbirds. Reported as a larval food plant for several native butterflies, including swallowtails and flats. Small flowers are visited by insects and contribute to rainforest food-web diversity. Dense evergreen foliage provides strong refuge, perching and movement habitat.
Flowering and fruiting: Small yellowish to greenish-white flowers occur in panicles, followed by purple-black fleshy fruit that commonly ripens from late summer into autumn.
Growth habit: Small to medium evergreen tree with a dense crown; indicative mature size 5–12 m × 3–6 m.
Cautions: Best sheltered while young; allow room for a small to medium tree. Tolerates more sun as it establishes if moisture is adequate.
