About this plant

Bumpy ash is a handsome native rainforest tree with glossy compound leaves, fragrant clusters of small pale flowers and woody capsules that release winged seeds. It develops into a substantial shade and habitat tree in favourable conditions. A rewarding selection for sheltered rainforest gardens and revegetation sites with fertile, reasonably moist soil.

More plant details

Garden uses
Rainforest restoration, larger habitat gardens and mixed native canopy.
Wildlife value
Summer flowers attract insects, while foliage provides food for Orchard Swallowtail caterpillars. The evergreen crown offers shade, shelter and bird perches; its seeds are wind-dispersed, not fleshy bird food.
Flowering and fruiting
Sprays of small pale flowers followed by woody capsules releasing winged seeds.
Growth habit
Medium to large evergreen rainforest tree with compound foliage and a spreading canopy.
Cautions
A large rainforest tree, often 15–30 m in cultivation but capable of reaching about 50 m in forest. Allow generous clearance from buildings and services; woody fruit capsules can fall.
