About this plant

A fast-growing local wattle with distinctive curved phyllodes and bright yellow flower spikes. It is a hardy pioneer tree for habitat gardens, screening and eucalypt-style plantings, where its blossom supplies an abundant seasonal insect resource.

Garden uses: Fast screen, pioneer tree, habitat garden, revegetation and mixed eucalypt planting.
Wildlife value: Flowering wattles attract insects that provide food for insect-eating birds. Acacias are important larval food plants for many native butterflies and moths. Pollen-rich flower spikes attract native bees and many other beneficial insects. Dense branching provides useful mid-storey shelter and perching habitat.
Flowering and fruiting: Bright yellow flower spikes are produced mainly from late winter into spring, followed by flattened seed pods.
Growth habit: Fast-growing shrub or small tree with a spreading crown; indicative mature size 3–10 m × 3–6 m.
Cautions: Can grow quickly and become a small tree; allow space away from paths and services. Short-lived compared with many canopy trees.
