About this plant

A dense, upright native sedge for creek margins, rain gardens and seasonally wet ground. Its strong clumping habit gives useful structure around water while providing excellent low habitat for frogs, insects and wetland birds.

Garden uses: Rain garden, pond edge, creek margin, swale, wetland planting, bank stabilisation and frog habitat.
Wildlife value: Dense sedge growth provides cover and foraging habitat for wetland and small birds. No specialist host-plant claim is used; its main wildlife role is structural habitat. Wind-pollinated and provides little nectar or pollen for animal pollinators. Excellent dense low cover for frogs, insects and other wetland wildlife.
Flowering and fruiting: Narrow upright brownish flower and seed heads are produced mainly through spring and summer.
Growth habit: Dense tufted perennial sedge with upright stems; indicative mature size 0.5–1.2 m × 0.5–1 m.
Cautions: Best where soil remains moist for at least part of the year; can become a substantial clump.
